Dear friends:
I had a wonderful travel in this spring festival . The happiness still springs even now so I decided to share with you my adventure. Pics will be a little bit late for the scanner in our lab is out of work.
The second day of lunar year, I felt so boring at home. My family were enjoying them in playing MAJiang (Chinese chess). There were noises everywhere . I can’t sleep on time ,can’t get up to welcome the morning sun, can’t read. I was nervous. I need a change.
When I told my mom and sisters, they said it was still in holiday ,everywhere was the same ,did not be silly , such  and so. Our neighbor just came back from her work. She worked in  the long distance bus station of our city. She said there was snowing in the mountains, the passengers said that.
I got the idea that I should go and see the snow in mountains. It was about 11 o’clock A.M. I packed some thick sweater into my bag and headed to the bus station. My first destination, Baoxing, three hours bus riding. The road is along with River Qingyi which runs through my city Ya’an and divides the city into two parts. So it is just like the road to Jiu Zai Gou but not so dangerous as it. Cliffs was at one side, the river was at the other side. After half an hour shaking, I fell into sleep. When I waked up, I found the mountains capped with snow were before my eyes.  The landform became the gorge. Sometimes the river was lower into the earth and what you fell is just like standing on a cliff. Sometimes it seems that you can touch it with your hands open. The water was getting greener as the bus ran further. The river was looked like a large piece of jade when I finally arrived Baoxing. I took pics at the entrance of the little town.
Baoxing is famous for its white marble .And also because of panda, the French found the first panda there and brought back a baby panda back to Paris about one hundred years before. More than half of the Chairman Mao statues in China you see were made by Baoxing white marble. Some of them even were curved by the local stonemen. There were only two streets in this little town. But almost one third of the shops were selling stone products. I stepped into a 20 square meter store. There were many big sculptures of animals. The owner of the shop was a very nice  short plum lady. She introduced the products in details and answered my silly questions patiently. After learning about that I was traveling by myself and tried to find some interesting place, she told me that I found the right place. She was a travel lover even she was not young anymore. She showed me a video cd about the Baoxing.. I saw Church, panda , beautiful pine trees, water eroded caves and the sunrise. She told me if I took the bus and went further, I will be in Tibetan district, further, can reach the snow mountains where pandas live in. She told me I must run if I wanna catch the last bus to Yaoji, a Tibetan county.
Thanks God, I caught that bus. After another 3 hours shaking and staying with puppy, duck, chicken and baby crying, I arrived Yaoji county around 8 o’clock at night, exausting and hungry. The bus driver found me a little inn. After bargaining with the little beautiful Tibetan girl ,I was accommandated in this clean and warm family inn at the price of ten yuan per night. The hostess was very able women. She had three beautiful daughters. The one I bargaining with was the eldest one, 14. The other two were twins to my surprise because I can not see any place they were alike. I was sitting beside the bonfire waiting for my dinner.  There had other guests from chengdu . They were singing , dancing ,drinking and which reminded me that it was spring festival. I even began to miss my family. The most active one were chatting with the hostess. I bade him with a smile when he asked me where I was from. Soon he was interested in me when I told him I was wandering alone and had the plan to the snow mountains. He was really shocked. He was a professional cable carrier driver He told me it was almost impossible to climb the snow mountains (the closest one is Jiajing Mountain). The snow was thick. Part of the road must be blocked by the snow, so the car canot  go . If I walked there, it would took 5 hours or more to arrive the foot of the mountain . And I did not have the mountain experience. No one knew what would be happened in the mountains. He told me that one advernturer died in the mountains because of snow blind last year.  So he suggested me think it over. If I like, I can stay with them for couple of days traveling in the countryside ,visiting their Tibetan friends.  I thanked him and asked him informations about Jiajing Mountain. All I knew was that Jiajing was the first big snow mountain The Red Army climbed during Long March. He told me all he knew. The first night in the inn was terrible. My room was on the top floor of the building-I mean it is the third floor, only me. The wind was wuthering. The wood wall was thin. I was cold even with the electricity –heating carpet. I heared the Kala Ok singing which lasted all night long. I was wondering where their energy came from.  Finally I fell into sleep for I was really tired.
The second day I left for Jiajing Mountain early in the morning just like a wanderer . It was still snowing in the morning. The world was completely white. Some kind of eagles flought over the county uttering terrible sound which you can hear in a thriller movie. I picked up my camera bag, left all the other stuff in the inn. Here I went.
For they told me that I can go along the river. So I went upstream. About 10 o’clock , sunshine showed. It was a little bit hot after about half hour walk. I striped off my coat, string it on my waist.  The snow was melting. The breeze blew.  The motorcar riders passing by me were in beautiful traditional festival clothes. They were on the way visiting their relatives or to market. The scene began to change after another hour walk. The grasses was withered in winter. So the yellow mud show.  Horses ,cows were lazily wandering in the ranch. There was no fog blur your eyes. The snow mountains showed. I had never seen such shocking beauty before. All was quiet , only the river running, the cows mourning.  The houses were spotted in the middle of the hills. All the fields were enclosed with half-man height stone wall, tidy and harmony. It seemed like the farmers had cultivated their fields with the way of their background garden. The cow paid no attention to me when I imitated its sound. I took pics with them.
The road along with the river made a big turn to void a hill. Behind the hill, a noisy village was presented before me. It was the biggest village I saw in Tibetan district for most of the Tibetan family lived far from each other. But this one was different.  There were about ten shops at the entrance of the village. It was more like a square than a market. People in their holiday clothes were chatting, enjoying the sunshine. They greeted each other happy new year with local language. Little Kids ran all the way , playing, firing the firework. They certainly surprised when I showed up. I asked one middle age man do me a favor to take a photo for me. He accepted happily. After that , we got acquainted with each other. They can speak Sichuan dialect and Tibetan. He told me he was the keeper of the Jiajing forest and he was waiting for a van . I told him that what I was heading for. He said he knew me a traveler at the very first sight but he was wondering that I was alone which was unusual. His wife and his five year old son gave hello to me. In no minute, the boy got acquainted with me too. He fired the firework with me at the riverside. Introduced his friends , a girl and a boy the same age as him, to me. He leaded me into the village in middle of which was a square. There were about more than ten women dancing Tibetan traditional dance with the rhythm. I can see they were practicing.  The forest keeper told me they were preparing for the biggest day of the new year, the nineth day of the lunar year. There would be a dancing competition between the villages. I was so regretted that I cannot stay so long.
After two hours waiting, the van did not show. I asked him why . When he told me that his friend must be drunk, the van showed. Seemed To testify his word, the driver began to vomit as he stepped out of the driving seat. My heart was sinking . It was almost 2 o’clock in the afternoon. If I kept walking I would have been very close to the foot of the mountain. He told me that we can rent another van but I must pay my share. No more agree, THAT’S JUST WHAT I WANT.
Three more hours wresting in a van, more uneven road, more beautiful scene, I arrived the foot of the mountain.
It was even colder than Yaoji. The forest field opened a little inn . The snow piled  in the yard. The water tap was freezed. They cooked food with the water from river. My cotton socks were wet by my sweaty feet. I had to dry them on the electricity oven. They were so kind to me that they said they did not care about the bad smell of my socks. It was rather a remote place. No mobile access, the only telephone was always ringing but never got through. The amusements  were so few. Television was the first choice although it can only receive 4 or 5 channels. I can see it amused them a lot. Most of them went to sleep at 8 or 9 o’clock  at night. A stranger like me was a exhilarant to them. They told that there were another gang of guys ,three men and two women, arrived in the morning, and now in the mountains. They were the earliest visitors this year. The door opened soon after I had my dinner with the forest keeper. The climbers came back. They were equipped really well.Snow-proof shoes, long water proof socks ,sun glasses, water proof clothes, military water container. And they told me that they did not reach the top of the mountain for the snow was very thick. Some of the road covered with ice. It was really slippery. They saw the yaks, the big wild birds. They show great interests when I told them that I was going to climb the snow mountain alone. The leader was a middle age man who was that kind of  professional traveler we called Donkey(lu zhu).He told me it was ok that I climbed the mountain alone if it would not snow that night for I can trace their footprints. But if it did snow, there would be some trouble. In that case, I’d better make me companied by someone who knew the mountain well. I told them that I canot afford a guide. They said I must equip myself better tomorrow . Especially the shoes and socks. And the cap canot be ignored too. I told them I prepared nothing. The forest keeper left the kitchen and came back with a bag. He said that I can use his stuff, more professional than the travelers although they were not good looking. So I got my equipments, military snow shoes, long snow proof socks, leg band, a big old fashion military Lei Feng hat, and even a trench coat. I was completely a Red Army soldier. After leaving me some sausages, candies, match ,a pair of sunglasses,Vitamin , a roll of film, they bade me Good luck and left. When the alarm clock waked me up the next morning, it was 8 o’clock. I found it was  snowing outside. I had to pray that the footprint did not covered by the falling snow. After haveing a big bowl of noodle as the breakfast, I was on the way. The forest keeper showed me the way to mountain, took some pics for me and went back..
I had several mountain climbing experience. But snow mountain , was the first time. The snow covered lane was quite suitable to step on. The feeling was just like you were drawing on a white paper as you wish after long days strictly drawing class. On the way of climbing, I almost forgot about myself. I just kept going like a spirit. My mind was occupied by all the beautiful scenes. The yaks can be seen all the way for the snow buried all the planes, they tried to find the food downhill. Some of them ran near me for they thought I got salt in my plastic bag. I took some pictures of them. The plants changed as I went higher. The foot of the mountain, the trees were the pines, firs and such big arbors. After one hour climbing, trees were lower and with much more lower branches. The snow did not cover my friends’ footprints. So I need not to worry about losing my way. I even saw their balloons they hanged on the trees, colorful candy pack paper.(They were not environment protection actives,  ,) . I found my film ran short and felt a little bit head dizzy. I decided to stop for a while for a rest. I was not quite sure about my camera which was a side of four rolls of Kodak films. If it did not work well, I must be awfully regretful. The very time, I saw a big thing moving in the threes . I held my breath and my heart began to pump dramatically. When the stranger was on the lane, my heart almost bursted with exciting. It was a panda, the lovely ,clumsy animal which I just saw in the zoo or in TV. Now it was just about ten feet away. Evidently,it noticed me and began to run into the bushes and trees. I threw all my stuff in my hands and began to chase. I felt short of breath and you can image how fast the panda can go. I realized that I can’t catch it. I stopped and focused my camera on it and prayed that it would work well. After two pics, the beautiful thing was out of the sight.  I thanked lord for that.
I should make it short now. With the high spirit, I climbed so fast. I arrived the top of the mountain just 1’o’clock. The snow was so thick. I draw hearts ,friends names, all kinds of pictures in the white snow sheet. The fire cultivated in the summit is still burning even now when I recalled the scene.
Descending was much easier. I was back at 3:30 p.m. The forest keepers were happy for me. They said I was the luckiest man these years because even some of the worker hadnot seen panda even they worked here for more than ten years. After drying my clothes ,shoes and socks on the oven, I left them and promised to draw them a line when my films developed.  I rent another motorcar and went back.
When I was back in Yaoji, my friends in inn were worrying about me. The hostess was so happy to see me back.. The people from Chengdu were happy for me too , I guess, a little bit envy too.
I came home at the fifth day of the lunar year.  The friends from chengdu gave me a ride for they decided to come home ahead of schedule. All was perfect.
The films were developed as soon as I arrived home. I showed my family my pictures, shared them my stories. My poor lazy nephew was regretting about his “No”.
That is the end of this adventure. I hope I can experience more in future.
   Pictures will be uploaded soon.
